About us

Finding a common hub for the growth and coming together of the German community in the Wellington region and beyond seems to be the big challenge. This website is to connect Germans living in New Zealand  and everyone who is interested in German language and culture.

We are a small but dedicated team based in Wellington which, over the years, has grown to a community of whānau. We strongly believe that German culture is more than traditional food, folkloristic music and wearing socks in jandals. It is about connection of origin and ancestry through German language and culture.

Together we share helpful resources, inspiring stories and put our heart and soul into this Club. We are on an amazing journey to keep German language and culture thriving in our local community.

The German Culture Club has its roots in German playgroups and other parents’ initiatives. As the bilingual journey can be a tremendous challenge for the minority language, the German Culture Club provides mutual encouragement and support through celebrating German customary practices together. It enables German expats to feel fully at home in New Zealand and is also a very fun way to stay connected with Germany for dual citizens – and their children – and Kiwis with a love for Germany alike. We offer many fun events for families like the annual traditional Christmas, Easter and Laternenfest celebrations as well as a German kids’ choir designed to keep our songs alive. We have tramping trips in the Wellington region and various get togethers.

One of our main events is the annual full immersion German language camp. This 5-day holiday camp is designed to create a fun educational environment for children and parents. Kids can fully immerse themselves in the German language and culture while forging lasting friendships.

To be able to offer these events for a small cost, we have our German fair as the annual fundraiser. It is also a fantastic way for friends and whānau of the German community to come together.
